Christmas Woes and a Happy New Year!
I will admit that I haven’t been attentive to my blog lately, but with the final month of 2011, you all know how it goes.
I was definitely looking forward to my Christmas with family last week when the evil monthly cramps attack just had to invade me on Christmas Eve. However, that’s not where the real woes come in. It came when I started to feel nausea on my stomach, and before I knew it, I was vomiting everything I have been consuming the entire day, even my daily tea habit and most especially water. I thought it was one of those times where I feel nausea the first day and then I’d feel well the next day and just wing it through the day. I opted not to go to Midnight Mass for choir because of my unhealthy condition, plus I might pass out in the middle of the mass, which can be very embarrassing.
Christmas Day came and I still felt the same as the day before. I was going to go to church with my parents to make up for missing my choir singing at the Midnight Mass, only to find that I still continued to vomit even without eating or drinking anything. We were also supposed to have a Christmas lunch and dinner party at my cousin’s house at San Carlos1 right after the gift exchanges that morning, but instead I opted to stay home. My parents though became so worried about my health that I might get worse, therefore they decided to have me check in at the local hospital. My mom and siblings went ahead to my cousin’s while my dad drove me to the hospital.
Once we got there and once the nurse examined me, they put me on IV after they took some lab tests from the blood samples. My sugar level shot up to 400, which was why my body couldn’t function properly anymore and couldn’t take anything I consume in to my body anymore. I ended up staying in the hospital throughout Christmas under IV, antibiotics, and of course, some shots of insulin2. On my first day there from my first shot of insulin, my sugar count quickly shrank to 200, which is still high. Throughout my four days of stay at the hospital, my sugar level has been going down and going up gradually. The lowest that I had actually went down to 66, which is rather too low.
I was discharged when I didn’t feel the vomiting/nausea anymore last Wednesday. My digestive system was still wack as my body still continues to have this “block” whenever I try to eat something, or rather it won’t let me eat anymore after the first few bites. It has been like that for three days3 of no-food torture4 until today— New Year’s Eve. Yay!
In short, I have a brand-new New Year’s Resolution: discipline myself with food and all my other unhealthy, “may be fatal to diabetes” habits5. Since my digestive system is officially back to normal6, this is one resolution that I feel would have a hard time tackling. This also means I have to get used to check my glucose meter every morning, take my diabetes pills during breakfast and dinner7, and simply just watch how much I eat.8
Happy New Year 2012, everyone! I’m sure I will be having a good year also.
- SF Peninsula, just across the bridge from where we live. [↩]
- It wasn’t that bad, really. I’ve gotten used to being “shot” at anyway. [↩]
- with the help of more drugs of course including antibiotics and medicine for my stomach, of course. [↩]
- and as a few of you know, I LOVE food!! [↩]
- that would be lack of sleep or sleeping later than midnight… [↩]
- I’ve eaten two bowls of cereal for breakfast, two bowls of chicken soup, a small bowl of Cheez-It crackers and a banana for lunch, even a bowl of Pancit Canton as a snack in-between today! GLORIOUS!
[↩] - this means I can’t skip breakfast also… [↩]
- Doctor isn’t putting me on insulin just yet, though after being educated on how to poke myself with the insulin, it’s not that bad either. It’s faster and virtually painless when I poke on the stomach than on the arm. [↩]
